Welcome to Introduction to Zoo medicine.

This course provides a valuable first step into the diverse and challenging world of zoo veterinary medicine, equipping professionals and students alike with the knowledge to advance their careers and improve standards of care for captive and managed wildlife

The course comprises of the following topics:

  • Penguin health, anaesthesia including the dive reflex, and common conditions
  • Big cat health and anaesthesia
  • Contraception in zoos
  • Equine health and anaesthesia in zoos including procedure planning and health and safety.
  • Flamingo pododermatitis and other conditions
  • Introduction to primate health, anesthesia and unique health conditions, including a detailed approach to the sick primate
  • Ruminant health and anaesthesia
  • Preventative health planning in zoological collections – how to write your own preventative health program

Access to the course will run over 12 weeks and it is advised that 1-3 hours a week are spent watching the webinar and reading the associated papers and resources.
